You can register to vote by mail, online, or in person. The deadline to register to vote is October 21 if registering by mail or online. The deadline to register to vote in person is October 28. To vote, you do not have to present photo ID unless you are a first time registrant who registered by mail and did not include a copy of your acceptable ID.

Registering to Vote

  • The deadline to register to vote by mail or online is October 21. The deadline to register to vote in person is October 28.

  • You do not need to bring anything with you to register in person at your County Election office. To register to vote online, you need a residential address and a Nebraska driver's license or State ID. If you are registering to vote in Nebraska for the first time by mail, you must provide a copy of a current and valid photo ID, or a copy of a utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document which is dated within 60 days before the date of presentation which shows your name and residence address.

  • Nebraska requires a residential address. P.O. Boxes, rural boxes, or general delivery are not accepted addresses.

  • You can check if your address is valid by calling your Election Official. You can also confirm your address online here.

  • You can get a valid ID to register to vote from your Department of Motor Vehicles.

  • Yes. If you have a Nebraska driver's license or Nebraska ID, you can register to vote online here.

  • Yes. You may register in person at your County Election office. You may also register in person through the Department of Motor Vehicles when applying for or renewing your driver's license. Alternatively, you can register through the State Department of Health and Human Services and State Department of Education at the time of application, renewal, or change of address in connection with public programs.

  • Yes, you can register to vote with a criminal record as long as two years have passed since you completed a felony sentence, including any parole or probation.

Checking & Updating Voter Registration

Voting by Mail/Absentee/Ballot Drop-Off

  • You do not need a reason to request an absentee ballot in Nebraska. All ballot requests must be received by October 24. Someone else can return your ballot for you. All ballots must be received by November 8.

  • Yes. Please check that you have filled out all required fields and signed your ballot. USPS recommends you mail in your ballot a week before the deadline to ensure your ballot is received on time. However, please factor in your personal experience with mail delivery times to and from your place of residence or where you drop off your ballot.

  • You can request a mail-in ballot by contacting your county election office by mail or fax. You can also print an online early voting application, complete the form, and then mail, fax, or scan/take a picture of your application and email it to your county election office. Your early voting application must be received by or before 6PM on October 24.

Voting In-Person

  • No. You do not need to present your ID to vote. You will only be asked for your ID or a form of address verification if you are a first time Nebraska registrant who mailed in your registration and did not include an ID or form of address verification when you mailed in your application.

  • You do not need an ID to vote. However, you can get a state ID here.

  • Yes. Under federal law (Section 208 of the Voting Rights Act), you are entitled to bring anyone you trust, such as a friend, family member, or neighbor, to the polling place AND into the polling booth to assist with voting. However, that person may not be your employer, running in the election, or a representative of your labor union. The person giving assistance also may not tell the voter how to vote.
